Assessing Oral Responses

Gail used observation during the writing class to assess how well students were "getting it" as she modeled the process of selecting a writing plan, choosing words and writing sentences to begin an original story. After modeling the steps in this process, she called on students individually and also had them talk to an elbow buddy to brainstorm possible story topics, choose a topic and include relevant details. Her observations formed the basis for further work in helping these students develop their writing skills.
