Comprehension is the core reading competency; that is, each of the foundational areas of reading instruction culminate in students being able to bring prior experiences, thinking skills and decoding skills together to understand text. When we read and construct meaning (or comprehend), our minds work continuously as we:
  • Pick up information
  • Connect the information to what we already know
  • Remember what is important
  • Adjust our thinking to incorporate new ideas or see them in a different way
  • Read between the lines to get a deeper meaning
  • Evaluate information and ideas
